A person’s a person, no matter how small

I recently read an interesting news story about three men.  They were three ordinary men with an extraordinary hobby.  For some reason, these three men enjoyed hunting bald eagles.  Now obviously the killing of our national bird cannot go unpunished.  In fact, the United States government punished these men by charging them $250,000 per violation and 2 years in prison apiece.  Obviously these men got what they deserved.  However, it is my personal belief that the American government is incredibly inconsistent.  You kill a bird and you receive a pretty hefty punishment, which is a good thing!  You mutilate an unborn child; you are patted on the back for living your life how YOU want to.  Are bald eagles really more precious than human life?  America’s view of abortion defies common sense!

Do only dumb people believe in God?

As I checked into my Twitter account on Tuesday, I saw a tweet that linked to a story about a 17 year old “HERO.” After clicking on the link, I found that the boy was being applauded for his efforts to stop the teaching of creationism in Louisiana schools. In 2008, the state passed a law that, according to the article, “permits creationism to creep into the public schools under the cover of scientific openness.” He decided that it was simply unacceptable for schools to teach creation. As he put it, “If you reject evolution, you reject all of science.”

God’s Wife

I am a huge fan of the Discovery channel.  They have a way of combining entertainment and learning.  This makes it one of the most watched channels at my house.  However, I hate when Discovery decides to do a special on the Bible or a related subject.

It never fails that when this happens the authority of Scripture is undermined, and the Christian faith that has been delivered to us by the apostles (Jude 3) is distorted.  A new special follows this same mold.

The special that was made for BBC, will also be aired by Discovery in the United States.  It claims to have discovered that the God of the Bible had a wife.  The chief researcher in this discovery is Francesca Stavrakopoulou, who teaches at the University of Exeter.

The Best Suffering Apologetic

Although I am convinced that Christians need (to the best of our ability) to be able to provide reasonable answers to the existence of suffering in the world. I am more convinced that the best way t0 win people to the Christian faith during times of suffering is in our actions.

When suffering strikes an individual, or a nation (like Japan during the time of this writing), they are not looking for a well-reasoned argument.  Instead, they are looking for comfort.

Christians can provide comfort to the sufferer because we serve a God who provides comfort (2 Corinthians 1).

Suffering and the Existence of God-Summation

This series has sought to answer the question:  Why do people suffer?  This question is an important question that has plagued God’s people throughout history.  Job, the Psalmists, and the prophets all deal with this difficult quagmire.

Today, people in the world continue to struggle with this question.  Atheists state the existence of suffering is proof that there is no God.  However, Christians see suffering in a different light.  This paper hopes to help Christians deal with this question in light of Scripture. In doing so, we have looked at the general cause of suffering, specific causes of suffering, the value of suffering through what it teaches us, and the value of suffering in what it teaches us about God.
