What the Bible Really REALLY says about sex?

Newsweek ran a story this week concerning the Bible and Sex.  It was sent to me by a good friend. So I took a few minute to read over the article.  As has become common place when the Bible is discussed in popular media, it is shown to teach something other than the “traditional” understanding.  Now, I am not for believing an interpretation because it is traditional, but I also do not think we should believe an interpretation because it is not traditional.

As I read through the article it was clear that the scholars who were being interviewed in the article had a far different view of Scripture than I.  Scripture is not the inspired, authoritative word of God to these scholars, but rather, it is simply an ancient text.  This view of Scripture, as well as very suspect exegesis, leads them to conclude that there is no clear Bible teaching on sex.  Therefore, they reject the traditional teaching that sex is limited to a man and a woman in a God sanctioned marriage.  (I use the world traditional, but it is more than tradition, I am convinced that the Bible teaches this!).

New Shame on Planned Parenthood

There was moral outrage this week with the release of a series of videos showing Planned Parenthood Employees describing how to secure abortions, STD tests, and other “services” for underage individuals involved in sex trafficking.  Numerous website and news outlets reported the facts.  Planned Parenthood responded by firing one of the persons involved, and releasing a statement trying to put the videos, in what they felt, was the appropriate context.

The attention was supposed to bring shame upon the organization, hoping to shock the conscience of those watching into an appropriate reaction.  I debated earlier in the week to post the video on this website and join in the campaign of shame. However, I changed my mind when I realized that an organization that is the Nation’s leading provider of abortions is not affected by shame.

Super Bowl Sin

It is Super Bowl weekend.  Many fans, if they can make it, will be pouring into the Dallas Area to watch the big game live.  Others will host get-togethers for friends and family to catch the game together.  Some will DVR the game to make sure they do not miss any of the action.

Sadly, the Super Bowl weekend also means an increase in certain types of sin.  Specifically, sins of the sexual variety increase at the Super Bowl site.  Advertisements are being sent to make up the shortage of women to work in “Gentleman’s” Club.  An expected increase in sex trafficking, and underage sex trafficking is also being reported.  Just two more examples of our societies reducing women, who are made in the image of God, to objects of lust.

Chick-fil-a Controversy

It isn’t often here that we discuss fast food chain restaurants, but today will be an exception.  Chick-fil-a, a chain that is known for being a “Christian” Chicken place, has been at the center of controversy lately.  The story behind the controversy seems innocent enough.  The company is involved in some way with an Art of Marriage Seminar.  This seminar consists of six sessions broadcast online with different organizations providing local hosting for people to watch.  Two groups involved with this seminar are Familylife.org and Pennsylvania Family Institute.  These two groups are the reason for the controversy.

Cherish the Children

The world is filled with children. They are precious souls to be nurtured and directed toward their wonderful potential in the world. One of our greatest ministries is our ministry to the children around us. Children, little ones and bigger ones, need parents and adults who will love them, affirm them, and lead them to unlock their potential for good.

We must allow the children to come to us. Jesus’ disciples rebuked the children who attempted to come to him for attention. Jesus insisted that they not keep the children away. Instead, he took them in his arms, gave them attention, prayed for them, and showed them that they mattered to him. Too many children around us are left hungry for the proper attention from adults. Kids need to be talked with, read to, smiled at, hugged, corrected, praised, and attended to so they know that they matter. Let’s be sure that in our own lives we don’t prevent the children from coming to us.
