What Are The Major Goals of Christian Voting?

So far we have discussed the Why and the How of voting, but I want to step back for a moment and provide a big picture view of voting. Specifically, what should be the major goals for Christians as they vote? In my mind I would want those goals to be in line with God’s goals for government.  Therefore I view voting with two goals in mind:

1. Will my vote limit evil in some way?   The fall of man in Genesis 3 brought evil into our world.  From that day forward God has put evil in check through various means.  Although we still have evil in this world, and appalling evil at times, the goodness of God limits the evil that we see. One way that God limits evil is through the establishment of Government. Scripture clearly states that government exists to punish wrongdoers and thus discourage evil (Romans 13:2, 4).

How Should Christians Vote?

Yesterday we dealt with the question of should Christians vote.  (You can read it here).  Today we ask how should Christians vote?

The simple answer is that Christians need to vote for politicians and ballot measures that are most in line with the teachings of Christ.  This has been seen most often in Christians voting with two main issues in mind: abortion and homosexuality.

However, I think those are not the only “moral” issues in the election. I think Christians should consider the economic policies of a candidate and determine if they are compatible with a Christian worldview.  I think Christians need to consider the issue of war.  Christians should also go into the voting booth asking the question of which candidates/platforms best fit God’s description of government?  Which group will best limit the evil that we see in our country and reward those who do good?

Should a Christian Vote?

In case you missed the memo (and by memo I mean the thousands of ads, the news coverage, and the rallies), or you are one of my foreign country readers, we have an election coming up in this country.  So the next few days I want to discuss voting on this site.  Not just voting in general, but voting from a Christian perspective. I really want to hear your thoughts on the issue so feel free to leave comments.

The normal objections to a Christian voting might be as followed (if you have others feel free to share them and then give your opinion on their legitimacy):

What Christians can learn from GCB?

Disclaimer:  I have never watched GCB and do not intend to watch.  Just like I never watched its sister show Desperate Housewives and never intend to.  I have, however, read enough about the show and of the shows plot line to understand what is is about.

GCB is a new show on ABC.  It stands for Good Christian Belles, although that was actually the second name. The initial name for the show was too vulgar and received too much outrage.  The show is a sitcom based around “Christian” women living in the Dallas area.  The show claims these women as Christians and church-goers, but their lifestyle and attitude depict them as judgmental hypocrites.

How do we save the Nation?

I’m fairly young.  Young enough in fact that I don’t remember the “good ole days.” You know the days where sin was not present in our land.  Where raising families was easy and mom always had fresh apple pie cooling on the window pane.  Of course I’ve seen the “good ole days.”  It is depicted in black and white movies.

I bring up the “good ole days,” because it seems more and more people are concerned with the trajectory of our nation.  The argument is that our nation is on a moral decline and therefore we need to “save the nation.”  Now, again, I did not live in the “good ole days” and nostalgia can blind us to the sins that were in our past.  However, I would agree that in general our nation has become more secular and sin has become less shameful.
