True Patriotism

What does true patriotism look like?  If you follow politics then you know the word patriotism and patriot is used a lot.  Politicians claim they are patriotic.  Opponents state the other guy is not. Whole parties are claimed to be unpatriotic.  What defines patriotism is often subjective.

Jeremiah the Patriot

Jeremiah had a great love for his nation. He was a patriot.  He mourned the judgment coming upon the people.  He understood the sin of the people and spoke out against the sin. He also understood God’s judgment because of sin.  In chapter 38 Jeremiah has been told by God to preach that the city will be destroyed.  This is not an easy message for Jeremiah, but it is the truth.  Jeremiah had a love for his people.  However, he had a greater love for God and speaking the truth.

Thats what Christians Do

Michele Bachmann attended an “anti-gay church,” quipped a perturbed commentator.  Another derided the prayer given by Rick Perry stating that what we need now is not prayer.

The basis of the outrage was the question: how could these people do such a thing?  How could Michele Bachmann attend such a church.  How could Rick Perry pray for forgiveness of the nations sin and God’s blessing?*  When I heard these questions, the first thought that came into my mind was, what do these people expect?

A Destructive Mindset

There is a common phrase used in our modern church that must be discontinued immediately.  It is a phrase used with good intention; however, this phrase could not be any more detrimental to the church as a whole.  This phrase is causing us to lose members, and this phrase is stifling growth.  You would think that with all of these negative consequences, the phrase would be obsolete; however, far too many people are blind to the damage caused by this seemingly harmless mindset.  If I have heard this phrase once, I have heard it a hundred times.  “The youth are the church’s future.”

Who is a Christian?

Christian Jihad.  Christian Terrorist.  White Christian Conservative.  These are a few of the headlines that were associated with Anders Behring Breivik.  It seemed as soon as the violence in Norway took place people wanted to find a label to associate this man with.  The first thought that many had was this attack was made by a Muslim Jihadist.  Then, news came out that the man was a not Muslim, but rather Christian.  Once this became clear the previously mentioned headlines began to take shape.

California governor signs bill requiring schools to teach gay history A California Parent’s Perspective

CNN reported Friday “Democratic California Gov. Jerry Brown said Thursday he had signed a bill that will require public schools in the state to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans” (CNN.com).  The article goes on to quote the bills author (Sen. Mark Leno) as saying,

“Today we are making history in California by ensuring that our textbooks and instructional materials no longer exclude the contributions of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Americans” (CNN.com).
