Influence of Entertainment

Our American culture is one that has developed an addiction to entertainment. We spend billions of dollars on movies, video games and music every year. We spend countless hours in front of the television over the course of our lives. Not only do we put our time and money into being entertained, we find ourselves engaged in the lives of those in the entertainment industry. Whether we realize it or not, this over-saturation of entertainment has an effect on our lives. First, it desensitizes us to sinful activity. Second, it leads to a compromise in our own morality. Finally, our approach to entertainment has a profound effect on our influence upon others.

Will Christians stop listening to Lady Gaga?

I’m hoping this post is totally unneeded.   However, I felt compelled to write.  This past week Lady Gaga came to Nashville.  From the News Reports the show was packed.  People dressed in all types of weird costumes and waited for the doors to open.  Honestly, I’m not much into pop music.  In fact, I normally have my radio dial set to some form of talk radio.  However,  I know who Lady Gaga is.

That being said I can’t say I have paid a lot of attention to her.  This changed though with her last couple of songs.  First, she had the song born this way.  It was as high as the Billboard Top 2, and is now sitting at number 13.  One section of the song goes:

Are we praying or just complaining?

I never really enjoyed politics. This is due to several reasons. Perhaps it was the memorization of numerous dates and names in high school history classes, or it could just be the fact that I had no say in politics until a couple of years ago. Regardless of reasoning, my apathy for politics has suddenly subsided with my recent involvement in an international relations course at the university I attend. Whether we realize it or not, our world is figuratively shrinking due to communicative technology, transportation, important relationships with other nations, and many other reasons. With this “globalization”, comes a need for intelligent leaders who can discern what is best for our blessed nation. Needless to say, America has been through a lot, but for the most part, our nation has been blessed.

What should the church expect from teens?

As time goes by, the numbers of Christian teens falling away continue to climb. One of the main causes of the problem is that we expect so little from the youth in the church. If a teen comes to worship and class periods and makes it to some of the youth group activities, we consider them to be doing well. The fact is, we treat them like youth group members and not Christians. What should we expect from teens?

First, we should expect to see spiritual growth. Many times we see a teen get baptized at 13, and by the time they turn 18 we just hope they can stay faithful through college. Anyone else that has been a Christian for 5 years is expected to be an involved, faithful member. We should expect nothing less from teens. The commandment to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18) applies to Christians of all ages. We need to teach them to study God’s Word and guide them into a strong relationship with God that is based on their own faith, not the faith of their peers or youth minister.

Terry Jones and Westboro–Wrong Examples of Christian Faith

The new way of gaining publicity for your church has been established. Be offensive.  Think about all the air time that the Westboro Baptist Church has received.  Over the last few months, and especially this week, Terry Jones has become a household name (I wrote about that story here).

The media takes these fringe groups and gives them instant publicity. They become well-known.  People with little contact to true Christianity, hear these stories, and associate them with the true faith. They begin to believe that this is what the Christian faith leads to.
