Illustration on Why Voting Matters

If you followed the blog in November, you might recall a series of posts concerning voting.  In it, I hoped to outline reasons for voting (here), how Christians should vote (here), and goals for voting (here).  As part of that series I made it clear that voting has its limitations, but also laid out that in voting Christians have the opportunity to aid the government in fulfilling its God given requirements.  Specifically, God has decreed that government should punish evildoers and promote good.

Should Boys wrestle Girls?

Wrestling is huge in Iowa.  It is like football in Texas. Winning a state championship in wrestling is a great accomplishment.  This is why it was so refreshing to read the story of a High School Sophomore yesterday.

Joel Northrup was one of the favorites to win his weight class. He was 35-4 on the season.  When it came time for his first match, it was expected that he would win.  Joel, though, refused to wrestle.  It wasn’t because of intimidation.  He wasn’t injured. Instead, Joel made a decision based on conviction.

Billy Ray Cyrus Parenting Advice

Never before have I found inspiration for a spiritual discussion from Billy Ray Cyrus. Something sent to me yesterday changed that.  It was an article detailing Mr. Cyrus’ frustration with his daughter’s choices.  He complained about being blamed for her questionable decisions (this somewhat annoyed me).  He also made an important statement that all parents, especially fathers, need to hear.  He said, “he should have been stricter.”

We do not know all the reasons why Billy Ray was not stricter with his daughter, but we know now that he has regret.  He, like many others, has witnessed the poor choices that have characterized her for quite some time now.  I can’t imagine how it must hurt.

Memories in Heaven

Disney World brought back memories of my childhood.  While riding the Winnie the Pooh ride I remember Saturday mornings with my grandma.  They consisted of peanut butter toast and watching cartons.

Another childhood memory was my mom bringing home new Disney books.  I seemed to have them all.  I could read Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, and many more.  My time at Disney got me thinking about memories.  And about heaven.

Let me explain.  I like thinking about heaven.  Death still scares me, but I long for heaven.  When thinking about heaven and memories, here is what crossed my mind.  One of the great aspects about heaven is that we get to keep our memories.  The great moments that we share on this earth will be with us forever.

Valentine’s Day and God’s Gift

It is Valentine’s Day. To be honest I know very little about the namesake of this day. I have never researched much into the “saints,” mainly because I think the whole notion of sainthood is not found in Scripture (other than the Scriptural teaching that ALL Christians are saints). Valentine’s Day, though, is known as the Holiday of Love.

Husbands and wives (and boyfriends and girlfriends) use the day to show their love for each other in a special way.  Flowers are ordered.  Chocolates are purchased.  Hallmark is happy.  Even if money is not spent, usually the day involves something special. What is interesting is that as much as our society gets love wrong, when it comes to this day we are showing that we understand something about love.  Love is seen in action.
