The Fruit Bearing Gospel

The gospel, which has come to you,  just like in all the world and it is also continually bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God–Colossians 1:5,6

Do you ever feel like you are not good enough?  Feel like you don’t quite measure up?  Maybe you see someone who just seems to have it together more than you do.  The family that has the perfect life.  When you compare yourselves to them you get discouraged.

Maybe you don’t, but I know I do.  I compare myself to other ministers, to other Christians, and to other people and it feels like they have life together more than I do.  They are more fruitful, more faithful.

Verses like this remind me of a truth that I know, but often forget.  The truth is God isn’t finished with me yet.  The gospel came to me.  I believed it.  I responded to it.  And it is bearing fruit in my life.  Maybe I’m not where I want to be yet, but I know God is bearing fruit.  I also know the gospel is still working in my life.

God has not given up on us, so lets not give up on ourselves.

Father,

The glorious gospel of your Son has changed my life.  I know I am not where I want to be, but I know that you are not finished with me.  Help me in times of discouragement.

Through You Son,

Amen

  1. Very nice! I remember meeting you in Maui and hope all is well with you now. Thanks for the devo. (Visit me at http://www.EdwardFudge.com).

  2. We should not be comparing ourselves with others and should not covet or be jealous. Romans 8 and Galatians 5 say there are only two lifestyles: living by the flesh or selfishness or living by the Holy Spirit. Thinking as Proverbs 3:5-8 commands helps an individual to become sensitive to the Holy Spirit, Who Jesus said in John 14-16 would be a believer’s convictor, comforter, teacher, and guide. The following is my translation of those important verses:
    Trust in the Lord
    with all my heart,
and lean not on my own understanding
    or past experiences.
    In all my ways acknowledge
    (be thankful for) Him,
and He (via the Holy Spirit) shall direct
    my thinking and doing.
