Disappointment

The raise doesn’t happen.  The promotion is given to someone else.  The promise isn’t kept.

Being let down is a part of the human experience.  It isn’t an easy part of it.  It is especially hard when we think we have been mislead, or lied to in some way.  When we get our hopes up.  Then, we face the crushing feeling of seeing them smashed.  Disappointment is hard to deal with.

The marriage wasn’t perfect.  The boss was dishonest.  The friend didn’t keep your confidence.  They can leave us in despair.

It is in times of disappointment, when we are convinced that no one can be trusted, that the faithfulness of God is truly seen.  In scripture the phrase “I will never leave you or forsake you” is used on several occasions.  It is a reminder that no matter the situation God is there.  He is faithful.  He will not disappoint.  When others let you down, don’t give in, because God is still there.  He is faithful.

Father,

Sadly, we are sinful and we live amongst sinful people.  This means that we disappoint and that others disappoint us.  God when we disappoint help others to turn to you.  And when we disappoint help us to trust that you will not leave or forsake us.

Through Your Son,

Amen

  1. Sure needed that today! I handle how people treat me ok most of the time, but I have the hardest time when my kids face disappointments or pain caused by others. Thanks for the reminder and a great lesson to teach my kids!

Thanks. I’m sure it is hard seeing disappointment in your children. It is hard for me to see when anyone is disappointed. It is also hard for me to handle disappointment.

But, we all have a Father who is there.

  3. Thanks for this post. I know I needed it in the worst way.

Lately it seems that as I walk through this life there are more bombs going off around me that seem to be destroying otherwise good people and are simply too close for comfort. Heck, more times than not, I feel I can’t crawl out of the craters left by the bombs (some major ones) that have hit me before another one goes off. With all the noise going off, it’s so easy to forget where God is in my life, or worse, the spot where I left Him. Fear, insecurity, worries, broken dreams, and the reality that life is not following the script I wrote out for myself aren’t the ingredients of a fruitful faith. They are the ingredients for the poison that destroys faith, causing us to wonder if God is too good to be true. But God promises us that He will never do the leaving and will always do the taking back if we come to our senses and come home. So here’s to road that leads back home (bomb craters and all).

Thanks again for the post and keep them coming.

Thanks for sharing. Life can leave us in despair. That is why the simple statement “I will never leave you” is so profound. God is there and faithful wherever we might find ourselves.
