Simple question: Do you know God? Some Christians in the First Century thought they knew God, but yet at the same time they were not confident in their relationship. First John was written to those Christians to reassure them.

One of John’s methods of evaluation is Christian conduct.  Whether or not one is committed to a godly lifestyle goes a long way in determining whether someone truly knows God. John writes:

“By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments…whoever keeps His Word, in him the love of God has been truly perfected, by this we know that we are in Him” (1 John 2:5)

True relationship with God bears fruits.  It is obedient to God.  Practically speaking, if one examines his/her life, his/her commitments, his/her time and his/her sacrifices, and finds that God is number one, they should have no reason to doubt if they truly know God. On the other hand, if one claims to know God, but their level of commitment declares otherwise, they are lying to themselves. John writes:

The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him (1 John 2:2-4).

So, Do you know God?

Father,

Help us to know you.  We know we are not perfect but help us to commit ourselves to loving obedience.

Through Your Son,

Amen
