When and to Whom was 2 Peter written?

Before looking at the text of 2 Peter we will establish, as best we can, to whom the book was written and when the work was written.

To Whom

Peter provides a spiritual description of the people in 1:1.  He states they are people who have “obtained a faith of equal standing to ours.”  “Ours” refers to the apostles.  Thus Peter is stating that he is writing to people who have the same quality and object of their faith as the apostles have.  They are Christians and children of God.  They have reached that standing in the same way the apostles have as well. They have reached this standing not by their own achievements, but rather by the righteousness of Jesus, who is God and Savior.

The Purpose of 2 Peter

If possible it is always important to know why a particular letter was written.  Having this information in mind as one interprets the various portions of the letter allows the student of God’s word to better see the overall purpose of the various sections that make up the correspondence.  The letter of 2 Peter, like 1 Peter, provides us with a clear statement as to its purpose.

Peter’s Statement of Purpose

Peter states why he is writing this second correspondence in 2 Peter 3:1-3.  He states, “This is the second letter I’m writing to you, loved ones. In both of them I am waking up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior given through the apostles, knowing this of first importance, that scoffers will come.”

What Christians can learn from GCB?

Disclaimer:  I have never watched GCB and do not intend to watch.  Just like I never watched its sister show Desperate Housewives and never intend to.  I have, however, read enough about the show and of the shows plot line to understand what is is about.

GCB is a new show on ABC.  It stands for Good Christian Belles, although that was actually the second name. The initial name for the show was too vulgar and received too much outrage.  The show is a sitcom based around “Christian” women living in the Dallas area.  The show claims these women as Christians and church-goers, but their lifestyle and attitude depict them as judgmental hypocrites.

Author of 2 Peter

There are few New Testament books more criticized than 2 Peter. Even in the Early Church there was discussion concerning the book.  The discussion concerns the author of 2 Peter.  Many scholars have argued that Peter could not have written Second Peter.

Arguments against Peter

Their arguments are as followed:

1. The Greek of 2nd Peter is different than the Greek of 1 Peter.

2. It is not referred to until the Early 3rd Century.

3. The themes are different in 1 and 2 Peter.

This has led some scholars to conclude that 2 Peter is a “testament.”  A book written not by the author himself, but by one of his followers.

How do we save the Nation?

I’m fairly young.  Young enough in fact that I don’t remember the “good ole days.” You know the days where sin was not present in our land.  Where raising families was easy and mom always had fresh apple pie cooling on the window pane.  Of course I’ve seen the “good ole days.”  It is depicted in black and white movies.

I bring up the “good ole days,” because it seems more and more people are concerned with the trajectory of our nation.  The argument is that our nation is on a moral decline and therefore we need to “save the nation.”  Now, again, I did not live in the “good ole days” and nostalgia can blind us to the sins that were in our past.  However, I would agree that in general our nation has become more secular and sin has become less shameful.
